Confessions is a monologue combing text and music based on Samuel Barber’s 1953 song cycle Hermit Songs and Augustine’s Confessions.

Hermit Songs draws upon a collection of short, anonymous poems written by Irish monks between the 8th and 13th centuries, in which they share, often with wit and surprising insight, their thoughts and observations on the simple monastic life. In a similar spirit Augustine, a theological scholar, records his confessions regarding his dissipated and debauched youth.

The thematic convergence of these works, along with their unmasked and introspective voices, draws the audience into a world of forbidden thoughts and the forces that tear at the masks we have learned to wear.
